Bluefish usually grow 40 to 45 inches in length and can weigh as much as 30lbs. The fish has an elongated, greenish-blue body and a silvery belly. Its large mouth has strong jaws and sharp teeth. Its tail fin is forked and typically a light green. The bluefish likes to eat squid and small, schooling fish such as menhaden and anchovies. They use sharp teeth to kill and feed on prey. Bluefish are known for being aggressive, a bluefish will kill another fish just for the sake of killing it. They have even been known to bite humans. It does not have many predators other than tuna, swordfish, sharks and humans of course. When fishing in Nags Head, North Carolina the bluefish is a must to catch if given the opportunity.
In North Carolina, Bluefish bites are best found from around May to around August when they migrate out.
Most natural bait will work well for catching Bluefish. Be sure to get enough weight to get your rig on the bottom. In warmer months fishing top water is more fun to some but is less likely to get bluefish. A shock leader or steel is a must for blues. A 3x long hook shank will better your chances with these intense fish.. Six inches of light steel, heavy fluorocarbon or the heavy fused braids are recommended. When you do find a school of bluefish do not be overly worried about presentation to bluefish.Pitch a bait and retrieve it fast enough through the school and you should get a bite!
