Flounder is not a specific one fish but rather a group of fish, a flatfish be specific, that include different species and different families. These fish live flat on the bottom of the ocean, where they lie on one side of their wide, flat bodies. They also have both eyes on one side of their heads. Either the left or right, depending on the species. Flounder are medium-sized fish that can weigh from 5 to 30 pounds. In Nags Head North, NC there are two types of flounder on the coast, Southern Flounder and Summer Flounder sometimes referred to as Fluke. Southern Flounder are more gentle in nature and must be fished slowly and patiently. Summer Flounder tend to be more aggressive than a southern and will strike and hold a hook much more aggressively.
In North Carolina, wait until April or May. Flounder will start moving into the shallows at this point in time. They like water temperatures from around 50 degrees to around 80 degrees. Do not expect high activity in very cold or very hot times. This would include the dead middle of summer and the colder times of winter.
Flounder typically ambush their food. They like to hide in oyster-shell beds, grassy areas, or sandy bottoms where they can kick sand on top of themselves. This gives them good camouflage for the ambush. One tactic that works very well is dragging live mullet minnows across a shell pile or grass bed. You can even put minnows on a flounder rig and cast them well over the pile to entice a bite. Flounder love minnows and also live shrimp. Anything that imitates minnows or shrimp will attract them including grubs and stripped meat from bait fish.
Soft plastic lures usually come with a body that has an integrated hook and can have weight attached, similar to a jig head or be fished weightless on a “wide gap hook”. This design is easier to cast and keeps the bait moving at a realistic way in the water during retrieval. This also allows the lure to be more weedless in grassy situations. Lures like flukes can be very productive.
Jig heads are excellent for angling around structures or over grass flats. Added small swim baits with a paddle tail that you slowly swim and drag on the bottom can produce bites most of the year. Hair jigs produce quality fish consistently as well, particularly when the flounder are sitting in a little deeper waters.
COASTAL WATERS ARE (Internal and 0-3 miles out)
In the state of North Carolina, currently, the 2022 recreational flounder season will open at 12:01 a.m. Sept. 1 and close at 11:59 p.m. Sept. 30 in internal and ocean waters of North Carolina. The minimum size limit will remain at 15 inches total length, and the creel limit will be 1 fish per person per day during the open recreational season.
